Borobodur and Beyond

Borobodur – the Buddhist cosmos stacked block by hand-carved block into a three dimensional mandala.

Human desire decorates the square base in bass relief the scenes of lust and debauchery evolving into the more meditative middle way in the mid galleries. Climb higher into the circle of enlightened existence depicted by 72 lattice-stupas each housing a seated Buddha statue, all the way to Nirvana – the empty stupa right at the top.

For many Borobodur is the purpose and high point of a trip to Java.
