China and Indonesia – Private Journey Design

Not into bikes? Or looking for something more specialised?

For more than 25 years I’ve been designing and leading journeys across China — and more recently Indonesia and Southeast Asia — working closely with travellers to shape trips around what genuinely interests them. Pace matters. Balance matters. The details matter.

The process is collaborative. The more we refine it together, the better the journey becomes.

Last year I formally added Indonesia after riding a motorbike through Bali to assess hotels, traffic flow, accessibility and downtime — focusing on avoiding congestion, building in restorative afternoons, and creating trips that suit your energy rather than exhaust it. I work with excellent local operators throughout Java — my personal favourite — and I’m always happy to lead small journeys there myself.

In China, I’ve organised and led many specialist tours beyond cycling. These include:

  • Tea journeys in Fujian

  • Textile explorations in Guizhou

  • Combined bike and hiking routes through Guangxi, Guizhou and along the Yangtze

  • Architecture and feng shui studies in the imperial cities — Beijing, Xi’an, Luoyang and Nanjing

  • Multiple crossings of the Tibetan plateau

  • Routes through Dongbei and along the Silk Road

My recommendations are grounded in long experience, trusted relationships, in-depth research and decades of reading and travel — 25 years and counting.
