Take the back road.
Cycling journeys through China, Bhutan, Nepal and beyond —
built around landscapes, food, history and the pleasure of
getting somewhere slowly.
Travel first. Cycling second.
We like bicycles because they put you at exactly the right speed
to notice a place.
BikeAways creates small-group rides and unusual journeys through
the quieter corners of Asia — country roads, village lanes,
mountain valleys, old trading towns and landscapes with stories
worth stopping for.
You don’t need to be a hardcore cyclist. Casual riders are very
much welcomed and encouraged.
Get on your bike.
A few of the journeys currently on the road — from easy weekends
out of Hong Kong to longer rides beneath the Himalayas.
The Kaiping Diaolou & Watchtower Way
Rice fields, bandits and baroque watchtowers —
where the Gold Rush came home.
75 kilometres of flat backroads through rice fields,
bamboo groves and villages, discovering faded mansions
and the extraordinary UNESCO diaolou built by generations
of overseas Chinese.
Hong Kong to Yangshuo — The Limestone Way
Karst mountains, village lanes and the Li and Yulong rivers.
Mostly flat backroad cycling through one of South China’s
great landscapes — farmland, villages, river valleys and
limestone peaks — after work Friday and back in Hong Kong
Sunday night.
Kathmandu to Pokhara — The Mid-Hills
Quiet country roads beneath the Annapurnas.
Ride from Kathmandu through Gorkha and the rural mid-hills
towards the lakes and mountains of Pokhara — village Nepal
away from the main highways.
“You don’t have to be a cyclist to come cycling with us.”
Some people love bicycles. Some simply discover that a bicycle
is a wonderful way to see a place.
Our rides are designed around the journey rather than speed,
Strava or suffering. We favour quiet roads, manageable distances,
good stops, interesting food and enough time to look around.
Rides are supported with guides, luggage transfers or trailing
vehicles depending on the route and access.
We know the road.
BikeAways grew out of decades of travelling, guiding, researching
and riding across Asia. The routes aren’t assembled from a map.
They’re shaped on the ground — often over many years — around
the things that make a place worth travelling through.
Years in Asia
Designing and leading journeys through China, Nepal, Bhutan,
Myanmar, Mongolia, Indonesia and beyond.
Groups
Enough people for good company; few enough that the journey
can remain flexible, personal and connected to the places
we’re travelling through.
Travel
Backroads, local food, architecture, history, landscapes and
the odd unexpected detour. Getting there is very much part
of the trip.
Private journeys designed around you.
BikeAways also designs specialist private journeys in China and
Indonesia for travellers who want something more personal than
an off-the-shelf tour.
Tea journeys in Fujian. Textiles in Guizhou. Architecture and
feng shui in China’s imperial cities. Tibetan plateau crossings.
Java. Food. History. Walking. Or some combination that hasn’t
occurred to us yet.
The process is collaborative: pace matters, balance matters and
the details matter.
2027 rides
Longer adventures and old favourites already taking shape.
Bajiaozhai — Hunan to Guilin
A longer South China ride through the extraordinary landscapes
between Hunan and Guangxi.
Yangshuo Bike Festival
Bikes, limestone mountains, food, friends and a little
Disco de Wheels.
Bhutan — Black Crane Festival Ride
Return to Bhutan for the autumn migration of the
black-necked cranes.
Stories, research & occasional rambling.
Part travel notebook, part route research — things discovered
while figuring out where to ride next.
Lunch at Ruishi Lou in the Kaiping Diaolou
From the road in one of China’s strangest and most fascinating
architectural landscapes.
Klongs, trains and mini mini bike rides to Chiang Mai
Trains, bicycles and the various pleasures and complications
of moving slowly through Southeast Asia.
China to the Caucasus — and quite a lot in between.
Kaiping. Fujian. Guizhou. Yangshuo. Bhutan. Nepal.
Myanmar. Mongolia. Georgia. Indonesia.
BikeAways has been running, researching and occasionally
inventing journeys across Asia for years. Have a rummage through
the old trips — they often come back to life.
