Hong Kong boasts some of the best hiking trails in Asia. So many of them in China have now been converted to roads, but Hong Kong has preserved the ancient network of pathways through the mountains that used to link up the old Hakka villages. The best are along ridgeline with stunning views over the South china sea, where pirates held out (repulse bay) and the local Punti boat people took shelter in the bays.
Hiking will introduce you to this history a side of Hong Kong that few tourists see, but which many locals and expatriate love.
And the paths are brilliantly maintained.
people are surprised to discover cows all over the North eastern New territories who tell a story of Hong Kong’s missionary days. Missionaries were really into setting up dairies even though many of the population were lactose intolerant. I guess the colonists and other European travellers in Hong Kong fascinating East meets west history were grateful in extremis.
Hong Kong has fishing villages like tai O which are straight out of a 1970’s Bruce Lee movie.
And there’s the Maclehose trail ( famous for the Oxfam trail walker) ; the Hong Kong trail with its spectre.
I want to keep waxing poetically about what you will see on the trails like monkeys in Mac 4, pangolins at Hoi Ha, …. But actually the point of this page is to let you know that Hike Hong Kong is a commissioned trip at the moment for a U.S. client.
Then date listed is his date – and as soon as he has a trip up, I will share his website where you can book the trip.
Or commission your own dates.
Mid September to Mid May are the best times to hike Hong Kong.
Then its HOT!!!!
