The 2nd Yangshuo Bike Festival
A Disco On Wheels and a Celebration of Eco-Tourism Ideals
September 4 to 6, 2015
Yangshuo in Guangxi Province, South China will have its second bike festival this fall!
Join the Yangshuo Bike Festival featuring the unique disco-de-wheels — a silent disco on bicycles, spun by a DJ on-the-go to enhance the magical Yangshuo landscape.
Festival-goers will be given a set of wireless headphones that within a certain range will pick up tunes selected by our mobile DJ to match the terrain, the weather and the mood of the riders. It is the element of surprise and the collective listening experience that makes it fun.
Imagine a meandering ride through charming villages set amongst looming limestone karsts, the inspiration behind famous Chinese poems and traditional ink paintings, accompanied by personalised mobile music mixologists.
Starting in Yangshuo on the famous Li River we will ride through rice fields along the stunning Jade Dragon River, through orchards and bamboo groves into the lesser known Jinbao River country, exploring ancient villages along the way.
Cyclists will have the option of a night in the countryside with cocktails inspired by local ingredients, a farmer’s feast and music by local artists.
Terry Li, the innkeeper at Valle Luna, will be supplying our main festival venue in a traditional restored and renovated 400 year old mud brick village in Gaotian Village, 15 km from Yangshuo Town.
Born in nearby Moon Hill village, Terry has dedicated the last four years to saving this 400 year old village and transforming it into a welcoming guesthouse / event space in the middle of an active farming community. Open air communal areas provide a traditional yet comfortable way to experience village life.
Punters can join the festival, including the disco de wheels, bands and a farmer’s feast for the bargain price of 300 RMB. If travelling to Yangshuo from out of town, festival-goers may prefer the full festival package (1900 RMB) which includes one night in Yangshuo town at the Magnolia Hotel, a room at Terry’s Valle Luna Hotel on festival night, meals and transfers.
The full package also includes a second day of riding that brings the disco-on-wheels back to Yangshuo via another stunning countryside feast in Chaolong village.
Bike-themed films, exchange forums with cycle and travel experts and a street after-party in Yangshuo will round out the festival events.
A celebration of cycling and music, the Yangshuo Bike Festival aims to put the fun as well as the feel-good factor into sustainable tourism.
Is this ride for you?
Yes it is! The festival is open to anyone who can ride a bike, including families. The festival rides are each around 15 km, mostly flat, casual, and irreverent.
Traditionally, bike festivals in China tend to be highly competiive race events but we aim to be the opposite and make biking fun and open to everyone.
However a longer and more challenging pre-festival ride will be offered for riders who appreciate that a few tough hills pay their way with spectacular views.
Support
We have a number of guides accompanying the ride which means you can ride at your own pace if you choose. To be in on the disco you have to be in range of our bike riding DJ who will be riding the average pace of the majority of the group — or hanging with those who get into it the most.
Cost:
300 RMB for the one day festival ride (BYO bike)
1900 RMB for the weekend festival package, includes meals, accommodation, luggage transfers, bikes, two rides, support and an airport / train station pick up.
Getting there and away
Guilin is the closest airport. It is then a 90 minute transfer by taxi to Yangshuo. Gongcheng Train station is only one hour from Yangshuo with trains arriving from Shenzhen and Guangzhou in approximately 2 – 2.5 hours.
We arrive back in Yangshuo Town by 2:30 pm on the Sunday ride, allowing time for transfers (1.5 hours) to Guilin airport / train station — though the festival will continue with a post-ride street party.
