This series of photos is from a Wuyishan Hiking trip that works well as a follow on from our Tea and Tulou Eco Ride in Fujian.
Wuyishan is famous for Rock Teas – a tasty version of Oolong Tea made in a traditional method and prized for the minerals that get sucked in through the roots washed off the ancient rock gardens in which they are planted! There are stunning Daoist monasteries reached by some of the lesser known hiking paths, and the monks are generally friendly – and may offer tea.
On a recent hike to my favourite monastery a grumpy monk who believed foreigners to be a scourge on China – had been driven out of the hills by local villagers when he turned on them too. he wouldn’t let them rest and have a couple of tea – and they moved him a long and replaced him with a friendlier monk. Power to the people! All they wanted was a place to rest in the shade on the way to their tea fields.
This is a story I was told over tea on a trip there four weeks ago to re-reccy the mountains.
This is honestly some of the most beautiful hiking you will ever do.
surrounding the park are tea houses of the dealers who invite you to partake, much like you would at a cellar door. The teas are sublime.
We may bring bikes up , as the riding is good , but at the moment its just hiking and tea.
the high speed rail makes it a brilliant add on to the Fujian Tea and Tulou Ride – the next trip departing in May3-5 2019
